Joseph B. Volpe is an Investment Principal for Merck Global Health Innovation Group overseeing its evergreen Health Technology portion of the fund which represents half of the overall fund allocation. His deft technology, business development experience and technical engineering background are coupled with an in-depth understanding of emerging technologies in the health care industry. This unique skill set provides Mr. Volpe with the foundation and knowledge to enable sound Health IT investments.
With access to numerous leading life science, commercial channel, marketing and industry experts, Mr. Volpe continually identifies and develops transformative global health care opportunities that are adjacent to Merck’s core business of pharmaceuticals and vaccines. This venture mentality streamlined investment process provides expansion capital for existing businesses while identifying and reviewing thousands of new opportunities and/or investment targets.
Prior to joining Merck, Mr. Volpe’s 26-year career included a post serving within Johnson & Johnson’s Market Place Innovation team. He was responsible for technology innovations across Consumer, Medical Device and Diagnostics and Pharmaceutical sectors. Additionally, he has coordinated business development opportunities in the IT health care arena with concentration on applications in the evidence-based Medicine/Outcomes/e-marketing and sales platforms.
He began his career as a Systems Engineer with Electronic Data Systems (EDS) working with health care insurance systems, military systems and robotics. He earned his Bachelor of Information Systems from the University of South Florida with a minor in Engineering Technology, and later graduated from a two-year EDS Engineering program. Mr. Volpe continues his education at the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton.
A well-respected industry professional, he has presented at venture oriented speaker panels, and conferences including the Microsoft CIO Summit, HIMSS and the Aging Society of America Conference. Mr. Volpe presently sits on numerous boards including Physicians Interactive, Preventice, HealthSense and Mihealth.
