Sandeep Shah
Chief Innovation Officer
Mr. Shah assumed the role of Chief Innovation Officer of Skyscape and was named to the Board of Directors in July 2009. Today, Skyscape is the worldwide leading service for trusted medical information by specialty for mobile devices.
Mr. Shah is a pioneer, innovator, and thought leader in the creation and delivery of mobile technologies for improving the quality of health care. His extraordinary vision and technical expertise are unique attributes that have shaped his professional career and personal commitment to enabling healthcare professionals with technology.
In 1993, Mr. Shah led the Constellation project team that developed the world’s first truly usable handheld solution for physicians. This landmark project, implemented at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital (both affiliated with Harvard Medical School) proved the effectiveness of providing medical information on handheld devices for use at the point of care. Many of the ideas and much of the innovation found in today’s mobile solutions originate from this seminal work.
In the ensuing years, Mr. Shah focused on developing a portfolio of innovative technologies, and in early 2000, launched Skyscape to bring the benefits of these solutions to healthcare workers across the globe. Over the past nine years, Mr. Shah has led Skyscape to profitable growth year over year while building up a powerful network of more than 1 million medical professionals, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Now, Skyscape’s suite of products and solutions is an integrated mobile information solution and includes an impressive portfolio of trusted resources from partnerships with more than 50 of the world’s largest medical publishers. Moreover, Skyscape, with its laser focus on the user experience, has developed a platform that supports a wide range of mobile devices and smartphones. Skyscape has been recognized as the “Most Innovative Company in New England” by the Smaller Business Association of New England, a recognition that places Skyscape in the elite company of Staples, Ben & Jerry, and Avid.
Mr. Shah helped build Skyscape in a traditional, bootstrapped (“old-fashioned”) manner, with most of the growth capital generated from the growing business. Amidst the furious pace of worldwide outsourcing, the company took an approach of establishing a wholly-owned subsidiary in India, extending the US-based operations seamlessly in multiple areas. There are now more than 125 personnel globally.
Before focusing on handheld devices, Mr. Shah was extensively involved with operating system kernels, networking, and massively parallel computers. His extensive work experience involves working with Apple, Microsoft, Digital, Logica (UK), Hitachi, and Wang. His passion remains the synergistic user interfaces between humans and computing. Mr. Shah started his career as a project engineer in the Computer Science & Engineering Department at the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. After that, his work at Godrej R&D involved implementing Unix operating system kernel and drivers to the indigenously developed Graphics workstation. He also spent two years in the Middle East at Oman Computer Services, Muscat (Sultanate of Oman) where he applied his skills to provide pioneering software such as English-Arabic word processing and Unix simulation layer on Wang OS.
Practicing his belief in the power of information shared, Mr. Shah has been active in teaching and mentoring of the technology community through seminars, panel discussions, training programs, and conferences. He is a Charter member at the prestigious TiE organization.
Mr. Shah earned a bachelor of technology degree in Electrical Engineering (1981) and holds a master in technology in computer science (1984) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, India.
Mr. Shah was named to PharmaVOICE magazine’s prestigious “Top 100 of the Most Inspiring People” list, and is a Mobile Village Gold Star winner in two categories, Visionary in Mobile Enterprise Software and Visionary in Mobile Healthcare Software.
